Strawberry Jam

Homemade Strawberry Jam

April 30, 2024

We have been making strawberry jam for as long as I can remember. A conveniently placed strawberry stand had to be passed every afternoon on the way home from school, and grabbing a gallon of juicy strawberries was just the way to begin warm afternoons outside playing. Spring always brings bright red strawberries, and the reminder that we have been eating the rest of the year pales compared to this fruit’s full potential. When the last pint of fresh berries is purchased for the season, it feels like it will be eons before we taste the glory of it all again. There is but one sliver of hope - strawberry freezer jam.

Somewhere between the berry-stained fingers and sweet sliced strawberry shortcake treats, Mom always made time to put back freezer jam. Unlike other jams and jellies, her freezer jam stayed bright red all year long. I could sit by the fire on a cold, snowy morning and watch the snow fall while eating strawberry jam on toast like we had just picked the berries from the field that day. Nothing compares to this novelty; it is the most supreme jam I have ever had!

When I got married in late April six years ago, I knew the perfect wedding favor. My mom, mother-in-law, and I whipped up enough jars of strawberry jam for everyone to take home from the big day; it was perfect!

When the first spring rolled around since Good Batch Mama was created, we all knew what was going on the menu- Strawberry Freezer Jam. So many of our meals come from years of family traditions, but never once have we hosted a lasagna day, but boy, did we have jam day! Throughout the years, mom hosted little parties where we made jam with friends and family. We stood around, capping and mushing strawberries and talking life while the apple trees bloomed outside and spring launched itself into all its beauty. I cannot see a plump red strawberry without thinking back to those days, the birds chirping out the window while we all scurried around like mice canning the rich red goodness of those in-season berries.

Luckily, strawberry jam day still exists. We still mark a day on the ever-so-crowded Good Batch Mama calendar and do our berry best to put back enough jam to last the whole Tri-Cities for the year. And though this is me fondly recalling my youth, not a sales pitch, it would be a sin not to tell you that strawberry jam day was this past Monday, and the freezer is loaded with jam for the taking. You can get yours on the website now!
